NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University hosts Rowan University in a Halloween matinee Saturday, with first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) on the line. The Captains, ranked tenth in the nation, are 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the NJAC, while the 23rd-ranked Profs are 6-1 and also 4-0 in league play. Kickoff at TowneBank Stadium is set for 1:00 p.m.
Paul Crowley's squad is coming off a 63-6 home victory over Vermont State Castleton last Saturday during Family Weekend, a win that marked the 22nd consecutive regular season victory for the Captains dating back to 2024.
"Rowan is obviously a very good football team," Crowley said as his team prepared this week. "They've been successful all year, especially on the defensive side of the ball. They've also got some offensive weapons that are scary, so we've been working hard to get ready for the challenge. We're really looking forward to another good test for our team and another great atmosphere for football at TowneBank Stadium."
The first place showdown features two dynamic defenses, with the Captains allowing just 9.1 points per game, and Rowan yielding just 11.0 points per game to its opponents. CNU is ninth in the nation in total defense, while Rowan is 11th.
Christopher Newport and Rowan will be meeting for the 17th time, and the series is all even at 8-8. The Captains have won the last five games, most recently a 49-41 double overtime victory last October 4th in Glassboro, N.J. The all-time series dates back to 2002, and the Captains are 4-5 all-time vs. the Profs at TowneBank Stadium.
The Profs are coming off a 30-7 home victory last Saturday over the College of New Jersey. Rowan's only loss this season came in Week 1 when the Profs were downed by Mary Hardin-Baylor, 21st-ranked at the time, by a 35-14 score.
