CNU Women's Basketball Checks Back Into D3hoops.com Top 25; Captains Also Ranked in WBCA Coaches Poll

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Winners in 13 of the last 14 games this season, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team moved up to No. 25 in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and re-entered the national rankings after a five week hiatus. The Captains (15-3) are also ranked No. 17 in this week's WBCA Coaches' Poll after a pair of wins last week at Pfeiffer University and at home against Lehman College.

A streak of 61 consecutive D3hoops.com Top 25 appearances for the Captains was snapped with the first regular season poll of the year after the Captains started the season ranked No. 20 in the preseason poll. In the first five regular season rankings, CNU was receiving votes in the media poll and checked back into the Top 25 this week.

The Captains have held onto a spot in the top 20 of the WBCA Coaches Poll throughout the season and enter this week's competition ranked No. 17 in the Division III rankings.

With a 15-3 overall record, the Captains' senior class of McKenna Snively and Hailey Kellogg have pulled within one win of the century mark for their career. Over the four-year stretch, CNU is 99-8 for a winning percentage of 92.5 percent and, with one more victory, Snively and Kellogg will become just the tenth class in program history to record 100 wins in their career. The duo currently sports the second-highest career winning percentage behind only last season's senior class that finished with an all-time record of 110-5 (.956).

The Captains have scored more points than any other Division III program this season and currently rank 20th nationally in scoring offense with a 75.7 ppg average. The offense includes a well-balanced rotation that includes getting 37.4 points per game from the bench, ranking second in the nation. Defensively, CNU ranks fifth nationally in turnover margin and sixth in turnovers forced per game while grabbing 15.3 steals per game, ranking 11th in DIII.

Sophomore Madison McKenzie leads the Captains with 11.9 points per game and 34 steals. She ranks second on the team in assists with 38 and is also averaging 3.4 rebounds per game. Snively is adding 8.5 points per game while shooting nearly 42 percent from the field this season. Mia Wilson also chips in 8.4 points per game off the bench for CNU.

This week, the Captains will return to action against Salisbury University on Saturday, January 17. Tip against the Sea Gulls is at 2:00 p.m. in the Freeman Center where the Captains are 5-0 this season and riding a 17-game winning streak at home.
