MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- Christopher Newport women's basketball returns to action on Thursday afternoon as the Captains (13-3) travel to Pfeiffer University for a 4:00 p.m. tip against the Falcons.
The Captains, ranked 19th in the WBCA Division III Coaches' Poll, are receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 this week after winning 11 of the last 12 games heading into the mid-week matchup. CNU is coming off a 67-46 win at home against Stockton on Saturday, January 3 and improved to 13-3 on the season.
Pfeiffer is 7-4 to start this year including a 5-1 record against USA South competition. The Falcons defeated Meredith on a neutral floor on Tuesday, January 6, 75-50, in conference play. This season, Pfeiffer is 4-0 in home games played at Merner Gym while averaging over 77 points per game.

It will be the first matchup between the two programs after Pfeiffer joined the USA South Athletic Conference in 2017 following Christopher Newport's exit in 2013. Previously, the Falcons competed as members of NCAA Division II.
CNU continues to showcase its patented balance offensively and rank third nationally in bench scoring with 37.1 points per game coming from the reserves. CNU leads the nation in total points scored and features one of the top-25 scoring offenses in Division III this year while averaging 74.4 points per game. Sophomore
Madison McKenzie is at the forefront of the offense, averaging a team-high 11.3 points per game this season. Senior guard
McKenna Snively is adding nearly nine points per game while shooting over 47 percent from the field including a 47.4 percent success rate from beyond the arc with nine made three-pointers.
Defensively, the Captains are among the most ferocious units in the nation, forcing nearly 29 turnovers per game to rank fifth in the nation. CNU ranks 14th in the country with 15.3 steals per game with a team-high 30 thefts from both McKenzie and junior
Caitlin Crump. The interior defense is led by
Jessica Dornak,
Noelle Cabiness, and
Elizabeth Creed with 44 blocked shots between them.
Pfeiffer also is among the nation's leaders in steals per game, snagging 17.1 steals per game to rank fifth nationally. The Falcons are tough defensively on the outside, holding opponents to just 19.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc to rank sixth in Division III. Three Pfeiffer players are averaging double figures with Ava Hairston leading the offense with 14.0 points per game. Miya Horton is adding 12.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while Lettie Michael, the team's leading three-point shooter, is adding 10.5 points per game with 30 made three-pointers this year.
Following the trek to Misenheimer, almost equidistant from Greensboro and Charlotte, the Captains will return home for a pair of home games. CNU will first welcome Lehman College on Sunday, January 11 at 1:00 p.m. before hosting Salisbury University on Saturday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m.
