NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team bounced back with a 67-46 win at home on Saturday afternoon as the Captains (13-3) dropped Stockton University (6-6) on Camper Reunion Day. CNU extended its home winning streak to 16, the fourth longest roll since the Freeman Center opened, and leaned heavily on its suffocating defense against the Ospreys.
Defensively, Christopher Newport held the visiting team to just 25.4 percent (16-63) from the field and a 22.2 percent (4-18) shooting performance from beyond the arc. The Captains Chaos also forced a season-high 36 turnovers and grabbed 18 steals in the game while frustrating the Stockton offense.
In the first quarter, an
Elizabeth Creed three-pointer erased the only deficit of the day for the Captains and Christopher Newport would utilize a 10-2 run to take the lead.
McKenna Snively added a triple and
Sarah Pritz connected from deep on the run as CNU took advantage of the fast break early. With less than four minutes to go, senior
Hailey Kellogg rifled a pass up the left side for
Madison McKenzie and the sophomore scoring leader dropped in a layup just five seconds after a score on the other end.
A late three-pointer in the first trimmed the lead to just four, 16-12, but the Captains continued to add to the lead early in the second quarter. They turned to junior
Mia Wilson in the second stanza as she went back-to-back from beyond the arc, including a four-point play, to give the Captains a 23-12 advantage less than two minutes into the second period. Stockton responded by chipping away and got as close as four, 26-22, but the Captains turned on the jets again and finished the half on a 9-0 run to take a 35-22 lead into the break.
Caitlin Crump splashed in a three-pointer to start the second half and
Jessica Dornak connected on a nice feed through a pair of bodies in the lane by McKenzie to extend the lead to 18. Despite a small Stockton run, the Captains managed to hold onto a double-digit lead for the remainder.
Kaycee Doughty finished on a feed from Crump and McKenzie added a three-pointer on a baseline bullet from
Sydney Richardson. The lead ballooned to as many as 24 in the fourth quarter when
Atiana Williams set up Wilson for another trey and gave the Captains a 58-37 advantage.
Rookie
Lily Soller finished on a lob pass from
Elizabeth Creed with less than three minutes to go and
Kendra Rigo capped the scoring at 67 in front of nearly 400 fans with a last-minute layup off another feed by Richardson.
Stockton was led by Zemirah Enalls with a double-double including 14 points and 19 rebounds while ChiChi Wokocha also hauled in 11 reounds for the visitors. Despite a rebounding advantage that included 23 offensive boards, the Captains' defense surrendered only five second-chance points in the game.
CNU got a game-high 17 points from
Mia Wilson and 11 points out of
Madison McKenzie as the only double-digit scoring performances.
Sarah Pritz added seven off the bench for the Captains while
Hailey Kellogg led the distribution with six assists in the game. Defensively, Kellogg snagged a team-high three steals while Crump, Snively, Pritz, and Williams each added a pair. Creed and Dornak each blocked a pair of shots while Snively added one rejection.
As a team, the Captains knocked down 37.3 percent (25-67) of shots from the field including nine three-pointers on 39.1 percent (9-23).
Christopher Newport will return to action on Thursday, January 8 as the Captains travel to face Pfeiffer University on the road. The Captains will return to the Freeman Center on Sunday, January 11 against Lehman College at 1:00 p.m.
