CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Back on the water for the first time in two weeks, the Christopher Newport sailing team appeared at the Charleston Fall Interconference regatta hosted by the College of Charleston. The Captains finished with a ninth-place showing in the 13-team fleet and were led by a seventh-place effort from the B division boat.Â
Aston Atherton and
Berend Van der Meer sailed together in the B division boat and finished out the event with 89 points to edge the United States Merchant Marine Academy by four points for seventh. The duo never finished outside of the top ten and recorded six top-five finishes in the 13 completed races.Â
In A division,
Josh Bendura and
Hannah Louise Roethel saved their best performance for last when they crossed the line with a win to close out a top-ten finish. Bendura and Roethel sailed to 102 total points with one bullet and three top five finishes.Â
Together, the Captains finished ninth overall with 191 total points. That mark edged out Eckerd for tenth by 34 points and trailed Hampton for eighth by 17 points. The host Cougars won the regatta with 84 total points, capturing the trophy by 13 points over Jacksonville.Â
CNU is next scheduled to return to competition on October 4-5 when they will host the Webb/Woollum Regatta in Hampton, Va.Â
