KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- With an eight-game unbeaten streak to start the season, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team has catapulted to No. 10 in the nation according to the United Soccer Coaches Division III Coaches' Poll. The Captains, who were unranked in the preseason and in the first poll of the 2025 season, shot up to No. 20 in the week two poll and back into the top-ten this week.
Christopher Newport climbed to No. 8 in the national rankings last season, marking the first top ten appearance by the Captains since 2016. This year, they return with a spot among the nation's elite after going 6-0-2 with a six-game winning streak heading into week four.
Denison University is the top-ranked team in Division III men's soccer and the Red Devils are followed in order by No. 2 Emory, No. 3 Augsburg, No. 4 Williams, and No. 5 Trinity (Texas). The Captains toppled the fifth-ranked Trinity Tigers, 3-2, in last week's action to give the Captains a marquee win this season. CNU also has a draw against No. 8 Dickinson.
Offensively, junior forward
Drew McWhinney scored twice against Trinity and took over the scoring lead for the Captains with six points on three goals. He was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after helping lift CNU to the nationally-ranked win.
Manzi Siibo has added a goal and an assist for three points while forwards
Ryan Buckon and
Joe Summerfield have each added a goal apiece for the group up top.
On the defensive side, the Captains have gotten loads of production from the starting unit on both ends of the field. Starting center back
