Drew McWhinney and Hayden Dewey Earn C2C Men's Soccer Player of the Week Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team continued a six-game winning streak and eight-match unbeaten streak, veterans Drew McWhinney and Hayden Dewey were named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Players of the Week. McWhinney was named the Offensive Player of the Week while Dewey collected the Defensive Player of the Week certificate for the second time this season.

Enduring the long trip to Texas, Christopher Newport returned to the Commonwealth with a pair of wins including a victory over a top-five opponent. CNU downed No. 4 Trinity (Texas) on a neutral field Friday night before also handling the host, Hardin-Simmons, in a Saturday evening tilt. With the wins, CNU is now 6-0-2 on the season with a six-game winning streak.

Leading the offense against the nationally-ranked Tigers, McWhinney scored twice in the first fifteen minutes to lift Christopher Newport to a pair of early leads. He scored in the first minute on an impressive connection of passes to stake the Captains to a 1-0 lead. Caleb Jones started the play by shuffling a pass up to Manzi Siibo, who turned and slipped a perfect through ball to McWhinney in the box. The junior chipped the keeper and CNU was up, 1-0.

Just over 14 minutes later, he again gave CNU a one-goal lead with his second goal of the game to make it 2-1. A slide tackle by Siibo put the ball in the air toward McWhinney at the top of the box. He then turned toward the middle and took on three Trinity defenders before getting loose long enough to rip a hard shot into the left side.

He now leads the team in scoring with six points on three goals this season. He also added a goal against Redlands earlier in the season to go with his Brace against the top-five opponent this week. In total, McWhinney took five shots and put four on target.

On the other end of the field, senior goalkeeper Hayden Dewey continued his streak of starts and has played every minute in net for CNU this year. On Friday night, he surrendered two goals to the Tigers, but secured his fifth win of the year by making four saves. Then, against the Cowboys, he added four more saves and stopped Hardin-Simmons from scoring to close out his third shutout of the year.

Dewey lowered his goals-against average to 0.75 for the season with an .824 save percentage. He has made 28 saves while facing 97 shots through the first eight games of 2025. CNU has now won three of the four C2C Defensive Player of the Week certificates this season with two being earned by Dewey.

CNU will continue their schedule on the road with a trip to Marymount University this Saturday, September 27. The Captains will kickoff against the Saints at 5:30 p.m.
