NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - As the Christopher Newport University softball team was participating in the NCAA Regional at Captains Park on Friday, five members of
Keith Parr's team were honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Senior pitcher
Jamie Martin, fifth-year senior third baseman
Brooke Greaver, and sophomore outfielder
Candace Slaw were named first team All-Region by the NFCA in Region 6. Senior pitcher
Kate Alger was selected second team All-Region, and senior outfielder
Brenna Morefield was chosen third team All-Region.
The Captains are 37-5 and heading into the NCAA Regional Championship Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Captains Park. CNU will be playing Randolph-Macon College on Saturday after the Yellow Jackets posted a 4-3 victory over the Captains on Friday. Christopher Newport bounced back to beat Alfred University, 8-3, later in the day Friday to set up the showdown with the Yellow Jackets.
Martin, the Pitcher of the Year in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference for the second straight season, has a record of 16-3 and an earned run average of 1.41. The Lorton, Va., native has struck out 158 batters this season in 119 innings of pitching. Greaver, the Player of the Year in the Coast-To-Coast for the second time in her career, is hitting .398 with 13 home runs and 60 runs batted in. The Abingdon, Md., product is presently fourth on CNU's all-time home run and runs batted in lists. Slaw, a sophomore outfielder from Warsaw, Va., tops the team in batting (..517), runs (63), and hits (75). She currently has the top average in a season in school history, and needs just one run and one hit to set new school single season marks in both categories.
Alger received second team status after recording a 17-2 mark this year and a 1.36 earned run average. The Staunton, Va., native has struck out 115 batters in 113 innings so far this season. Morefield, a senior outfielder from Fredericksburg, Va., currently is hitting .413 and has contributed 43 base hits and scored 30 times through the first 42 games.
All five Captains to receive All-Region status were selected as All-Conference members by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference.Â
