GENEVA, Ohio -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams will be represented by a pair of throwers at the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships as
Latrell Fomby and
Katie Stevens secured berths to the national competition, which will begin on May 22 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Fomby earned his spot in the men's discus, which will take place on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Meanwhile, Stevens picked up a pair of bids in the women's hammer throw and discus. She will open her week in the discus at 1 p.m. on Thursday before contending for national supremacy in the hammer on Saturday at 11 a.m.
For those fans unable to attend the meet, live results and a video stream of the action will be available at NCAA.com.
Seeded 15th in the country, Fomby became just the fifth Captain in program history to earn a spot at the national meet in the men's discus. In that exclusive club, he joined former All-Americans William Sanderlin (1988) and Legend Hayes (2017-18) as well as longtime standouts Kevin Boggs (2006) and Brendon Burrows (2017).
Fomby punched his ticket after establishing a new PR with a 51.55-meter launch at the Widener Final Qualifier on Monday. That marked the third-longest throw in program history and the finest effort in the South Region this year by nearly nine feet.
Along with his historic heave, Fomby starred in the discus throughout the spring. He earned All-Conference accolades in the event after placing second at the league championships with a 47.70-meter toss. He also posted a victory at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic and finished first among Division III competitors at the New Captains Classic.
In addition to his work in the spring, Fomby also picked up All-Region accolades in the indoor shot put and weight throw while claiming his second career conference title in the latter event during the winter season. For that performance, he was named the Virginia State Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year.
Returning to the outdoor championships for the second straight year, Stevens enters the competition seeded 19th in the discus and 20th in the hammer. She remains the only Captain in school history to earn a bid in the hammer, while she joins Leigh Trayers as the only standouts to compete in the women's discus. Trayers placed 13th at the 2004 meet.
Dominating the competition throughout her senior campaign, Stevens posted a season-best mark of 45.41 meters in the discus at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships, which also set a new meet record. Later, she added her top mark in the hammer at the Widener Final Qualifier after firing a 52.56-meter missile.
Along with her league title in the discus, Stevens also claimed conference crowns in the hammer and shot put. In seven appearances so far this spring, she has five wins in the hammer, three in the shot put, and two in the discus.
Stevens is looking to build upon last year's performance at the NCAA Championships in which she garnered first-team All-American nods in the discus after placing fifth in the field. She also came in 18th in the hammer.
In addition to her work during the outdoor season, Stevens is also a two-time second-team All-American in the weight throw. She finished 12th in the event during the 2024 indoor championships before coming in 16th earlier this year.
With the work of Fomby and Stevens, Christopher Newport will be sending two throwers to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2017. Eight years ago, Tyler Robin and Hannah Shoemaker both competed in the women's shot put, while Legend Hayes and Brendon Burrows took part in the men's discus.
