WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team captured a 12th place finish in the 19-team fleet at the 2025 Azalea Bowl Regatta held in North Carolina this weekend. The Captains finished with 148 points including a 71-point showing in A division and a 77-point effort in B Division.
The Captains finished ahead of Clemson, UCF, and UNC Wilmington in the top-15 and trailed The Citadel and Michigan for a spot in the top ten by single digits. The United States Merchant Marine Academy won the event with 31 points.
Seven races were completed on Saturday but the breeze was too aggressive for action on Sunday. The event was called following the final completed rotation on Saturday.
In A division sailing, the Captains finished 10th with 71 points as
Walter Roou and
Gabby Byrne sailed together. The duo captured the best finish of the weekend for CNU in the first race of the regatta with a seventh-place showing. Overall, the Captains' A division boat finished in the top ten four times including a 10-9-10 spurt in the middle three races.
The B division boat was sailed by
Noah Hubbard and newcomer Hannah Roethel. The tandem finished in 11th place with 77 points after capturing three top-ten finishes. The best of the weekend came in the first race in the B rotation with an eight-place showing.
CNU will continue the Spring season at the Grant Trophy being held in Chestertown, Md. at Washington College (Md.).
