NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport University softball travels to Salem, Va., on Wednesday as the third-ranked Captains take on the Maroons of Roanoke College. The doubleheader at the Moyer Sports Complex is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.

Keith Parr's squad is 29-3 on the year and coming off a sweep at the University of Lynchburg on Saturday. CNU took the opener by a 7-0 score, and then won the nightcap, 2-0.

Wednesday's twin bill was originally scheduled for April 6th, but was re-scheduled due to poor weather. Roanoke has a record of 15-19 on the season heading into a doubleheader Tuesday night at home against Eastern Mennonite University. The Maroons were 6-12 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. CNU and Roanoke have played 32 previous games in the all-time series, and the Captains hold a 23-9 edge in the series. Last April, the teams split a doubleheader at Captains Park.

Christopher Newport centerfielder Candace Slaw continues to lead the country in runs scored with 52 in 32 games this year. Slaw, a sophomore leadoff hitter, is also fourth in the country in batting average at .585. Fifth-year senior third baseman Brooke Greaver is second in the nation in runs batted in with 53, and tied for 11th in home runs with 11. CNU, as a team, is currently fourth in Division III in total home runs with 38, and the Captains are 16th in runs batted in (213) and 18th in team batting average (.363).

In the circle, senior Jamie Martin is now tenth in the nation in strikeouts with 124. Martin, the Pitcher of the Week this week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference for the fourth time this season, went over the 500-strikeout mark for her career last weekend, joining teammate Kate Alger as the only CNU pitchers to ever reach the 500 mark. Alger is currently tied for 14th in the country in victories with a 14-1 record. CNU pitchers this season have registered the 13th-lowest team ERA at 1.71.

CNU's defense has also been solid this season, and the Captains are now 14th in the country in team fielding percentage at .974.

It will be Senior Day at Captains Park, and pre-game ceremonies will begin at 12:45 followed by the start of the twin bill at 1:00 p.m.
