ITHACA, N.Y. -- Competing in the America Trophy, the conference championship regatta for open dinghy competition in the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) conference, the Christopher Newport sailing team completed a 14th place finish this weekend. The Captains tied for 13th and finished 14th after a tiebreaker against Hampton University.
The 18-team fleet was unable to compete more than one race in each division on Saturday due to complex wind patterns. On Sunday, eleven races were completed for both divisions in a steady 10-17 knot wind from the NNW. Georgetown captured the MAISA Fleet Race Championship and earned automatic qualification into the ICSA National Championship.
CNU scored 281 points with 146 in A division and 135 in B division. CNU finished in 14th in A division and captured the same finish in the B division sailing.
The A division boat was sailed by
Aston Atherton with Berend van Der Meer as crew.
Josh Bendura and
Jon Matney paired up for the B division races. Atherton steered the A division boat to six top-ten finishes while Bendura guided the B division tandem to four top-ten finishes. The B division pair earned a pair of fifth-place efforts to post the finest showing of the weekend for the Captains.
Christopher Newport will close out the regular season schedule at the Admirals Cup hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy on April 26-27.
