NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Several schedule changes have been announced by Christopher Newport University Softball Head Coach
Keith Parr. The Captains, who are 26-2 and ranked third in the country this week, haven't played since splitting a doubleheader at Randolph-Macon College last Friday.
CNU was scheduled to play at Roanoke College last Sunday and at William Peace University on Friday. Both doubleheaders were wiped out due to poor weather conditions. The Captains will make up the doubleheader at Roanoke on Wednesday, April 23rd, at 3:00 p.m. The twin bill at William Peace will not be made up.
Christopher Newport's planned doubleheader next week vs. Virginia Wesleyan has been moved from Thursday to Friday. The Captains will now play the Marlins at Captains Park on Friday, April 18th, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
While the Captains have not played in a week, several CNU standouts continue to excel in national statistics. Sophomore centerfielder
Candace Slaw continues to lead the country in runs scored with 47. Slaw, CNU's leadoff hitter, is now third in base hits with 55, and fourth in the nation in batting average at .598.
Fifth-year senior third baseman
Brooke Greaver continues to lead the country in runs batted in. Greaver has 46 RBI in the first 28 games, and is also tied for fifth in the nation in home runs with ten. The Captains as a team have hit 31 home runs so far, which is ninth in the country in Division III.
Christopher Newport's pitching staff has the ninth-lowest earned run average, giving up just 1.50 earned runs per game. Senior
Jamie Martin is sixth in the nation in strikeouts with 114, while fellow senior starter
Kate Alger is 15th in Division III with 91 strikeouts. Alger is also tied for eighth in victories with a 13-0 record to date.
