2025 SAILPACK ORIENTAL INTERCOLLEGIATE - Full Results
ORIENTAL, N.C. -- Taking on a truly nationwide fleet that included teams from San Diego State, the University of South Florida, Michigan State, and the University of Texas among others, the Christopher Newport sailing team pulled away or a win of the 2025 Sailpack Oriental Intercollegiate Regatta. The Captains finished with 63 points total, beating out a tie for second between Eckerd College and Jacksonville University by nine points.
CNU tied for the B division title with the host North Carolina State Wolfpack with 26 total points and won the division via head-to-head tiebreaker. In A division, the Captains took second place with 37 points despite a pair of breakdowns, edging Eckered and Jacksonville by one point. San Diego State won A division with 26 points.
In B division,
Josh Bendura and Jonathan Matney paired up for a dominant showing including three bullets. The CNU pair finished with back-to-back wins and wrapped up the event never having crossed the line outside of the top five. In nine completed races, CNU finished first, second or third five times.
The A division boat had five top-five finishes including a regatta-best second-place finish in the fourth race.
Aston Atherton and
Berend Van der Meer sailed together in all nine races.
As the final B division set progressed, four teams were in contention until the second downwind leg when the Captains raced to the finish line for the win, clinching the weekend for the Captains.
MAISA SPRING WOMEN'S FLEET RACE CHAMPIONSHIP - Full Results
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Christopher Newport women's sailing team finished 11th at the MAISA Spring Women's Fleet Race Championship in the 15-team fleet. CNU scored 305 total points with 143 points in A division and 162 in B division.
The A division boat was sailed by
Grace Watlington and
Gail Schneider as CNU finished with an 11th place showing. The duo recorded a third-place effort in the 11th race of the weekend and added three total top-five efforts. CNU crossed the line in the top ten in nine of the 15 total races.
In B division, CNU notched a 12th place finish with
Laura Smith and
Gabby Byrne sailing for the Captains. The B division boat notched the finest finish of the weekend for CNU with a second-place showing in the seventh race. Smth and Byrne had five top ten finishes in a span of six races in the middle of the regatta.
Georgetown won the event with 112 total points.
