NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University's third-ranked softball squad hosts the Avenging Angels of Meredith College Sunday at Captains Park. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
The Captains are 21-1 on the year, and have now won nine straight games after sweeping a pair on Thursday over Bridgewater College by scores of 3-1 and 8-2. The team is currently in a stretch of 14 straight home games, and the Captains are now 9-1 during the home stand, which will end next Wednesday when
Keith Parr's squad hosts North Carolina Wesleyan in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.

Kate Alger and fifth-year third basemanÂ
Brooke Greaver led the charge in the first game Thursday vs. the Eagles. Alger out-dueled Bridgewater starter MacKenzie Cauthorn by throwing a complete game, allowing just one hit, and striking out ten batters. Greaver crushed two home runs to drive in all three runs in the 3-1 victory to open the day.
In the second game, the Captains erupted for eight runs on 12 hits in the 8-2 victory. Greaver drove home three more runs, two with a single and one with a sacrifice fly, giving her 36 runs batted in this year in just 22 games. Meredith Brickner also each drove in two runs as the Captains completed the sweep.
Sophomore centerfielder
Candace Slaw was four-for-four at the plate in the nightcap, and ended up going six-for-seven for the day, scoring four times. She raised her batting average back over the .600 mark, and now is 46-for-74 for the year (.622).
Meredith College, located in Raleigh, N.C., had a record of 10-12 coming into the weekend. The Angels played a doubleheader at Greensboro College on Saturday, and fell twice at home on Wednesday vs. 24th-ranked Pfeiffer by scores of 8-0 and 9-1. CNU and Meredith have played 41 games in the all-time series, and the Captains hold a 38-3 advantage. Christopher Newport has won the last 17 games in the series, including a sweep last year at Captains Park by scores of 13-0 and 8-0.
