Hannah Orloff, junior
Hailey Kellogg, and sophomore
Elizabeth Creed collected the honor. For
Sydney Sherman, it is her second career selection after earning the recognition at Mary Washington last season.
The 2024-25 Academic All-District Women's Basketball teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-District honorees must have competed in 90 percent of the institution's games or have started in at least 66 percent while carrying a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher as at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
The quartet of Captains joins an exclusive group that includes Barbara Davis (2010-11), Sondra Fan (2021-23, 2022-23),
Hannah Kaloi (2022-23),
Gabbi San Diego (2022-23),
Katy Rader (2022-23), and
Nicole Timko (2023-24) as CNU women's basketball stars to collect the esteemed certificate.
Sherman is a two-time selection and was a key addition to the Captains on the floor this season. A graduate student working toward a Master of Financial Analysis degree, Sherman was the only CNU player to appear in all 28 games this season. She started nine games and averaged 13.0 minutes per contest for the Captains while rankinga mong the team leaders in rebounding (3.5 rpg) and blocked shots (0.5 bpg). She scored a season-high 14 points while grabbing eight rebounds against Warren Wilson on January 12 and hauled in 11 rebounds twice, against Regent on February 1 and at Mary Washington on February 15.
Also in the front court, four-year senior
Hannah Orloff enjoyed a breakout final season for the Captains and was one of the most formidable players in the region. A first team All-Region selection, Orloff was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year as well as the Defensive Player of the Year. The team's leading rebounder (7.1 rpg) posted one of the finest shot-blocking seasons in recent memory for the Captains with 61 rejections to move up to fourth on the all-time list at CNU. She averaged 8.3 points per game and knocked down over 59 percent of her field goal attempts during the year. Off the floor, Orloff is set to graduate with a degree in Organismal and Environmental Biology and intends to attend graduate school.
Junior
Hailey Kellogg missed just one game during the 2024-25 season as she appeared in 27 games with 13 starts. Kellogg ranked second on the team with 5 assists during the year while also adding a defensive tenacity with 43 steals, also ranking second on the squad. She averaged a team-high 20.3 minutes per game during her third season on the squad and continues to be one of the most reliable Captains during her career with 86 games played. Over her first three years, she has piled up 172 career assists including back-to-back 65-assist seasons.
Finally, sophomore
Elizabeth Creed collects her first career Academic All-District pick after posting a 3.91 cumulative GPA while majoring in Psychology. The second-year star ranked third on the team in scoring (7.4 ppg) and second in rebounding (4.7 rpg) while starting in 18 of her 26 games played this season. A versatile option for the Captains on both ends of the floor, Creed knocked down over 40 percent of her attempts from the field while adding 34 steals and 12 blocks on the defensive side. She scored in double figures six times including a season-high 14 points in the NCAA Tournament opening round matchup against Montclair State when she finished 6-for-11 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers.
With the aid of the aforementioned quartet, Christopher Newport finished the season ranked No. 14 in the final WBCA Coaches Poll and No. 18 in the D3hoops.com national rankings. CNU concluded the year with a 26-2 overall record after winning a sixth consecutive conference title and reaching the NCAA Tournament for the ninth straight season.
