ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Looking to continue a five-game winning streak, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team is headed to North Carolina Wesleyan University for a matchup against the Battling Bishops (1-4) on Thursday night. Tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Everet Gymnasium in Rocky Mount, N.C. as the Captains (7-2) will take on their former conference foes for the 88th time.

The Captains, ranked 18th in the nation this week in the WBCA Coaches Poll, have won five in a row including a 89-63 win on Tuesday night against Marymount University. In the win streak, CNU has won by an average of over 27 points per game while holding opponents to just over 55 points per contest. They will take on a North Carolina Wesleyan squad that is 1-4 through the first five games.

The matchup is one of the longest in program history as the two teams will do battle for the 88th time dating back to January 17, 1979. For three and a half decades, the two teams played multiple times a year as competitors in the Dixie Intercollegiate and then USA South Athletic Conference. Throughout the rivalry, CNU has had the upper hand with a dominant 70-17 advantage in the series, but 12 of those 17 losses have come at Everett Gymnasium with the Captains on the road.

For fans unable to make the trip across the border to the south, live stats will be available online. A live video webcast will also be available via FloCollege subscription. Links to both can be found at the top of this page and on the women's basketball schedule at CNUsports.com.

With a high volume rotation and balanced offensive production, the Captains have featured six different leading scorers through the first nine games. On Tuesday night, junior forward Elizabeth Creed collected her second straight double-double and is leading the Captains with 6.0 rebounds per game so far this season. Creed is also pouring in 7.8 points per game as one of six players averaging at least 7.0 points per game this season. Among that group is the team's leading scorer, Madison McKenzie, adding 13.0 points per game after a 19-point showing against the Saints on Tuesday night.

Senior point guard Hailey Kellogg is closing in on 200 career assists, needing just five more, and leads the Captains this season with 23 assists through nine games. On the defensive side, the Captains are led by rookie Sydney Worsham with 24 steals while McKenzie has added 22.

The Bishops are led by Anaya Hall with 16.8 points per game while Dorinda Jordan is adding 12.0 points and a team-high 8.8 rebounds per game. Hall scored a season-high 23 points in a loss to Roanoke and Jordan had a 19-rebound performance against Lynchburg this season.

Following the trip to Rocky Mount, the Captains will face off against Division I Navy in an exhibition for the Captains and a counting regular season game for the Midshipmen (5-2). The game against the Mids is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14.
