NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
The Christopher Newport University softball squad will host Bridgewater College Thursday at Captains Park. The doubleheader is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. Keith Parr's Captains are 19-1 and have won seven straight games. The Eagles of Bridgewater are 12-6 entering Thursday's action.

Christopher Newport University is again ranked third in the nation for the second straight week in the poll from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Christopher Newport swept a doubleheader at Captains Park Saturday, beating Tufts University by scores of 8-3 and 6-0. Senior pitchers Jamie Martin and Kate Alger each picked up victories, and CNU's offense produced 14 runs on 26 hits in the twin bill.

The Captains are currently in a stretch of 14 consecutive home games, and so far CNU is 7-1 in the stretch with six more home games to come before the team hits the road again. CNU is 13-1 at home so far this season. Christopher Newport opened the year with a 12-0 start before falling to top-ranked East Texas Baptist in the opening game of the Cross Bay Bash.

Christopher Newport has been led at the plate this year by sophomore Candace Slaw, who is hitting .594 with a team-high 32 runs scored and 40 base hits through 20 games. Fifth-year senior Brooke Greaver has driven in a team-high 30 runs with six home runs to date, and  is hitting .444. Freshman Cora Thomas leads the squad with 15 stolen bases.

In the circle, seniors Kate Alger and Jamie Martin have again been outstanding. Alger, CNU's all-time strikeout leader, is 9-0 with an earned run average of 0.76. She has struck out 60 batters in 55 innings of work. Martin is 8-1 with an ERA of 1.40 and has struck out 79 in 50 innings this year.

Bridgewater is currently 12-6 on the year, and the Eagles are coming off two losses to 17th-ranked Gettysburg on Sunday, with both games decided in the eighth inning. BC is a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, and the Eagles opened up conference play on Saturday with a pair of victories over Guilford College. CNU and Bridgewater have played 32 games in the past, and the Captains hold a 21-11 edge in the all-time series. CNU has won the last six games played, including two last season at Bridgewater by scores of 4-1 and 7-1.
