Captains Win the 2025 Hanbury Trophy as CNU Sailing Holds off Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team hosted the 2025 Hanbury Trophy at Youth Sailing Virginia in Hampton, Va. and captured the first win of the season for the Captains. On the water during a beautiful day on Saturday, the nine-team fleet was able to complete all nine races in the combined division event and Christopher Newport finished with 55 points, edging out Hampton by 12 points for the win.

CNU finished with 26 points in A division and 29 points in B division to finish first and second in the 18-boat standings. Hampton finished third and fourth in an effort to catch the Captains, but CNU held off the comeback bid.

In A division, Aston Atherton and Berend Van der Meer paired up to finish in the top five of all nine races including a pair of wins. In B division, Josh Bendura and Jon Matney also had two wins and finished in the top five in all but one race. In four straight races, a CNU boat crossed the line first between races 4-7.

Christopher Newport will return to action this weekend at the MAISA Women's in Annapolis.
