NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University is ranked third in the nation this week, and the Captains host a Top 25 softball doubleheader Saturday with Tufts University. The first pitch has been moved up to 11:30 a.m. at Captains Park.
The Captains are 17-1 to start the season and have won five straight games, all in last weekend's Cross Bay Bash at Captains Park. Christopher Newport opened the year with a 12-0 start before falling to top-ranked East Texas Baptist in the opening game of the Bash.
Keith Parr's squad bounced back with five straight victories over nationally-ranked Pfeiffer University and Moravian University...as well as three wins over George Fox University.

Brooke Greaver, who have been honored as the National Players of the Week the last two weeks by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Slaw is currently hitting .644 on the year (38 hits in 59 at bats) with eight doubles, two home runs, and 12 stolen bases. She has already scored 30 runs in 18 games, and has been chosen the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Greaver has driven in 29 runs in 18 games, and has hit six home runs. She is currently fifth on the all-time CNU home run list with 32, and has been selected the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week twice this season.

Kate Alger is the new all-time strikeout leader in CNU softball history. Alger has whiffed 57 batters this year in 50 innings pitched, and has struck out 502 for her career. Alger is 8-0 with an earned run average of 0.84 so far in 2025, and has been named the Pitcher of the Week the last two weeks in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference.
Tufts University s currently 4-8 to start the season, and the Jumbos are tied for 23rd in the nation in the latest poll from the NFCA. Tufts dropped a pair of games on Wednesday at Randolph-Macon College by scores of 3-2 (8 innings) and 4-3. CNU and Tufts will be playing for the first time ever. Tufts won the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2014 and 2015, recording a 51-0 record in the 2015 season, the best record in NCAA history. CNU went 47-1 in 2022 when the Captains won their only NCAA title.
