CNU Sailing Finishes 12th at the St. Mary's Women's Inter-Conference

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team finished 12th out of 18 teams at the St. Mary's Women's Inter-Conference this weekend. The Captains finished with 243 points including 110 in A division and 133 in B division.

The sailing on Saturday was spotty with two races being finished around Noon before another extended postponement. Only two more races were completed on Saturday but the Sunday weather was more tenable for sailing and the fleet managed eight more races.

For Christopher Newport, the Saturday races proved to be the difference as CNU struggled on the opening day. On day two, though, CNU caught fire, specifically in A division with six top-ten finishes including a win in the final rotation. The B division boat also finished strong with a third- and a fifth-place finish to close out the regatta.

The A division boat was sailed by Grace Watlington and Gail Schneider as the duo finished 11th with 110 points. Laura Smith paired with Gabby Byrne for 12 races while adding rookie Hannah Roethel for one rotation in B division sailing. The group in B division finished 13th with 133 points.

Christopher Newport will return to action next weekend at the Hanbury Trophy.
