Captains Sweep George Fox to Improve to 17-1; Martin and Alger Post Wins to Conclude Cross Bay Bash

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Seventh-ranked Christopher Newport University recorded two victories Sunday afternoon at Captains Park, defeating George Fox University by scores of 9-0 and 6-1. The first game of the twin bill was halted after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. The Captains are now 17-1, and won five of six games over the three-day Cross Bay Bash this weekend.

Fifth-year senior third baseman Brooke Greaver posted two hits in each game, and was four-for-six in the twin bill with three runs scored and three RBI. Greaver hit a solo home run in the second inning of the nightcap, her third home run in as many days, and has now driven in a team-high 29 runs in just 18 games for the Captains. The long ball was her sixth of year, and 32nd of her career.

Sophomore centerfielder Candace Slaw continued her torrid pace by going three-for-five in the doubleheader and also logged three runs scored and three runs batted in. Slaw, CNU's leadoff hitter, crushed her second home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the second inning of the opener to get the scoring started. She doubled later in the opener, and hit a sacrifice fly in the nightcap. Slaw is now hitting .644 for the season over the first 18 games.

Senior Sammy Drew also homered for the Captains, a two-run blast in the third frame of the first game, for her first home run of the season. Drew also brought home a run with a bases loaded walk later in the opener. Senior shortstop Kendall Bentley delivered a three-run double in the fourth inning of the first game to provide the 9-0 final verdict. Christopher Newport also got first inning RBI singles in the second game from senior Meredith Brickner, sophomore Mackenzie Sowonik, and freshman Cora Thomas, as the Captains scored four times en route to the 6-1 win.

Senior pitchers Jamie Martin and Kate Alger were the beneficiaries of the 15-run and 18-hit outburst by the CNU lineup. Both struck out ten Bruins batters, and both earned wins in the sweep on a breezy and overcast day at Captains Park. Martin improved to 7-1 on the year, striking out ten over five innings while allowing just three hits and one walk. Alger, now 8-0, gave up just one run on a solo home run, and two hits and one walk. Alger's ten strikeouts give her 502 for her career over 428.1 innings pitched. She became the all-time leader in strikeouts in CNU history on Saturday, and Sunday became the first to ever go over the 500 strikeout mark.

George Fox fell to 5-6 on the year with the losses. The lone run of the day for the Bruins came on a solo shot from second baseman Nicole Campa.

Christopher Newport returns to action on Saturday, hosting a doubleheader with Tufts University. The first pitch is set for 12 noon at Captains Park.
