NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University swept a doubleheader at Captains Park Saturday, beating Tufts University by scores of 8-3 and 6-0. The Captains, ranked third in the country, are now 19-1 and have won seven straight games.Senior pitchers
Jamie Martin and
Kate Alger each picked up victories, and CNU's offense produced 14 runs on 26 hits in the twin bill. The games were played on a sunny and cool afternoon on the CNU campus, and were the first-ever between the programs.
Five different Captains drove in runs in the opening game, as
Keith Parr's squad scored eight runs on 14 hits in the 8-3 victory. Senior
Sammy Drew was three-for-four and drove in runs with a fifth inning double and a sixth inning single. CNU scored three runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead, and then added two runs in the fifth and sixth frames to pull away. Seniors
Meredith Brickner and
Kendall Bentley as well as sophomore
Natalie Quinlan all went two-for-three in the first game, with Brickner driving in two runs while Bentley and Quinlan had one RBI each.
Lefty
Jamie Martin started the opener and went the distance to improve to 8-1 on the season, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out nine. All of the runs scored by the Jumbos for the day came on a three-run home run from Heavan Oliva in the third inning that briefly gave Tufts a 3-1 edge before the Captains answered with three runs of their own in the home half of the third.
In the nightcap, senior
Kate Alger threw five shutout innings and freshman
Hailey Butler completed the shutout performance with two hitless innings as the Captains registered the 6-0 verdict. Alger, now 9-0, struck out three and gave up just two hits to the Jumbos.
Christopher Newport scored six runs on a dozen hits in game two, with senior second baseman
Olivia Tullous bringing home three runs with a run-scoring double in the second, and a two-run single in the fifth. Tullous was joined by fifth-year senior third baseman
Brooke Greaver and senior shortstop
Kendall Bentley with two hits in the game. Bentley finished the day four-for-six at the plate with three runs batted in and two runs scored for CNU.
Tufts, ranked tied for 23rd in the nation, is now 4-10. The Captains return to action on Thursday, hosting Bridgewater at Captains Park. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4:00 p.m.
