NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After a three-game road swing to open the 2025 campaign, the 16th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will make its home debut on Saturday at 4 p.m. when the Captains host Shenandoah at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the weekend, CNU sits at 2-1 on the season, while Shenandoah is 1-1 overall and 0-1 on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport will make its first appearance at home after beginning the year with three straight road games for the first time in program history. During the early portion of the season, CNU knocked off Lynchburg and St. Mary's (Md.) before dropping a hard-fought 12-10 decision at Randolph-Macon on Wednesday evening.
Flashing a high-powered offense, the Captains have scored at least 10 times in each of their first three games. That equals the third-longest streak to open a season in the last decade. Helping headline the attack,
Faith O'Connor has carved out her own spot in the history books during the first two weeks of the season.
After serving as a reserve during her freshman campaign, the second-year standout has started the first three games of the year and notched a pair of goals in each outing. With that run, she became just the fourth Captain in program history to post a multi-goal performance in each of her first three collegiate starts. In that exclusive club, she joined CNU Hall of Famer Meaghan Galvin and former legends Erin Callahan and Madison Callan.
Adding even more luster to her accomplishment, O'Connor also has at least one assist in each game this season. Only Callahan had two goals and a helper in each of her first three starts.
Overall, O'Connor's 11 points lead the squad, while
Kate Lamendola has a team-high eight goals. Among other stars,
Grace Taylor has two assists in each of her first two appearances this year, while
Brookelyn Morrison has seven strikes, including five against Randolph-Macon on Wednesday. That eruption included three free-position tallies, which equaled the fourth-most by a Captain and matched the highest total since 2019.
In addition to her offensive exploits, Morrison has 10 takeaways this season. In her career, the junior All-American now boasts 87 caused turnovers, which places her three away from tying
Emma Jackson's all-time program record. Incredibly,
Madi Rozgonyi also has 83 career strips, which places her fifth on the school's all-time charts.
Along with the Captains chasing history, Lamendola is averaging 4.00 takeaways per game this season. That ranks 21st among all players in the NCAA.
While Christopher Newport has been impressive at taking the ball away from the opposition this season, Shenandoah has been equally adept at sustaining possessions. Entering the weekend, the Hornets are averaging only 11 turnovers per contest. That places the squad in the top-20 nationally.
Shenandoah is coming off of a tough 11-6 setback at Mary Washington last Saturday. During that battle, Brinley Tozer deposited a hat-trick, including two strikes in the fourth quarter. Emily Ransom also chipped in with four points, while Ainsley Buckner added seven draw controls. Between the pipes, Madison Perry secured five saves over the final three quarters.
Overall this season, Alex Ripkin leads the Hornets with eight points, including six goals. All six of her tallies came in a 15-14 overtime victory against St. Mary's (Md.) on February 15. Meanwhile, Buckner has 13 draws and five points, while Perry and Maddie Gaboury have combined for a .324 save percentage and 12.30 goals-against-average.
In 26 previous meetings between the two programs, CNU holds a 20-6 edge in the series with Shenandoah. However, the Hornets have won the previous three match-ups, including an 8-6 win in Winchester last year. Morrison had four caused turnovers in that contest for the Captains, while Buckner had three points for the victors.
Following Saturday's test, Christopher Newport will remain at home on March 5 for a midweek showdown with RPI beginning at 4 p.m.
