CNU Sophomore Madison McKenzie Named Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After helping lead the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team to a pair of road victories, sophomore guard Madison McKenzie was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week. McKenzie collects her first career recognition as the league's top player after averaging 21.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game.

During the week, the 15th-ranked Christopher Newport squad traveled to TCNJ and earned a 26-point win, 85-59, and then on to Arcadia for a 25-point win, 93-68. With the wins, the Captains improved to 4-2 overall.

In the game against TCNJ, McKenzie scored 15 points at TCNJ while adding 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Then, in a career-best performance at Arcadia, she recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 27 points and 10 rebounds. She added 5 steals and 3 assists against the Knights.

This season, McKenzie is leading the team with 14.7 points per game while starting all six games. She is shooting over 43 percent (35-81) from the field and has been dangerous at the free-throw line knocking down 77.8 percent (14-18). Defensively, the Gainesville, Va. native has snagged 13 steals including a season-high five at Arcadia on Saturday.

McKenzie is the first CNU player to be recognized by the C2C this season. Last year, the Captains captured seven of the last nine weekly awards from the league and McKenzie's honor is now the eighth in the last 12 selections for Christopher Newport.

CNU is set to travel to Averett University for a Tuesday evening matchup with tip scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
