NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Following a league-clinching 45-42 victory Saturday over Salisbury University, two members of the Christopher Newport University football squad were honored Monday by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Junior quarterback
Connor Barry and sophomore defensive lineman
Charlie Clawson, Jr., were selected the conference's offensive and defensive Players of the WeekÂ
Barry, from Vienna, Va., threw for two scores and also crossed the goal line on a pair of touchdown runs against the Sea Gulls. He finished the night 15-of-29 passing for 254 yards, and threw scoring passes of nine yards to sophomore
Josh Powell and 36 yards to senior
Colin Hart. His TD scampers came from nine and 11 yards away as the Captains improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the NJAC. Barry has now thrown for 32 scores this year, with just three interceptions. The honor for Barry is his sixth offensive Player of the Week nod, and his third straight.
Clawson, Jr., from Stephens City, Va., scored on a 21-yard fumble recovery to put the Captains ahead for the first time in the game, 28-24, in the second quarter Saturday night at TowneBank Stadium. He also made five tackles, two solo and three assisted, including a sack as the Captains guaranteed their second NJAC title and 12th trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Christopher Newport will conclude the regular season Friday night at the College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. as the Captains attempt to complete their first undefeated regular season in the 25-year history of the program. TCNJ is 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the NJAC following a 30-27 loss to Montclair State on Saturday.
In addition, Christopher Newport moved up to eighth in the new poll released Monday by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). CNU was ranked seventh in the new poll released Sunday by D3football.com, the highest ranking for the Captains in the 25-year history of the program.
