Barry and Tharrington Receive NJAC Weekly Football Honors as Captains Move Up to 21st in AFCA Poll

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University received two weekly football awards Monday from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Junior quarterback Connor Barry was selected the Offensive Player of the Week, and freshman running back Drevyon Tharrington was chosen the Offensive Rookie of the Week following CNU's 49-41 victory at Rowan University on Saturday.

Barry registered another memorable performance, as he threw for five touchdowns, matching a school record, and also ran for a score as CNU battled back from a 20-6 first quarter deficit. The Vienna, Va., product completed 27 of 44 passes for 434 yards, the third-most passing yards in a game in CNU history.This marks the second week in a row Barry has received the honor, and the third time this season.

Tharrington, a Granby High School grad and Norfolk native, averaged four yards per carry Saturday in the NJAC opener. He rushed for 24 yards on six carries, and also contributed two key kickoff returns, one of 62 yards, for the Captains. In all, he accounted for 108 total yards as Christopher Newport won its fourth straight game to start the season. It's also the second straight week Tharrington has been honored by the NJAC as Offensive Rookie of the Week.

In addition to the individual honors, the Captains also moved up three spots to 21st in the weekly national poll from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). CNU is also ranked 21st this week in the new poll from D3football.com.

The Captains hit the road again this week and make their first trip to the state of Vermont Saturday to play new NJAC member Vermont State-Castleton (2-2, 0-1). Kickoff is set for 12 noon in Castleton, Vt. Christopher Newport will be looking to start a season with five straight victories for the first time in the 25-year history of CNU football.
