CNU Sailing Captures Win at the Webb/Woollum Regatta This Weekend

HAMPTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team hosted its first event of the 2025-26 season and came away with its first win as well. With eight completed races on Saturday, the Captains built a lead and captured the win at Youth Sailing Virginia in historic Fort Monroe.

CNU finished 1-2 in the final standings in a fleet of eight teams that all saw both A and B division sail together. Grace Watlington and Jon Matney captured the all division championship with 29 points, edging out their teammates Josh Bendura and Hannah Louise Roethel by just one point with 30. 

The Captains posted two wins in the regatta, including in the final race of the event when Watlington and Matney sailed across the finish line first. They also finished first in the third race, while the B division boat of Bendura and Roethel started with a 2-2-3 burst out of the gates. They also finished with a pair of third-place efforts in the final two starts. 

CNU ended the regatta with 59 total points to beat second-place St. Mary's (Md.) by 11. The Seahawks had 70 total points, ahead of third-place Fordham by 21 with 91. Virginia Tech (133 pts) and Old Dominion (135 pts) rounded out the top five and were followed in order by Washington (Md.) (143 pts), Delaware (223 pts), and William and Mary (225 pts).
