OXFORD, Pa. -- Participating in the first ever Colonial Women's Golf Conference Championship, the Christopher Newport women's golf team captured a runner-up finish after 36 holes at the Wyncote Golf Club. Babson College (+56) captured the inaugural tournament championship while the Captains finished at 75-over with a 651 (326-325).Â
The Captains fired a 325 on the second day to shave one stroke off their opening round finish. Senior
Katie Watson had the best second round for the Captains with a five-over 77 while
Taylor Davis captured a tournament-best overall finish with a 17-over 161 (80-81). Watson's round was the best of the day in the 35-player field.Â
Davis wrapped up the 36-hole tournament in seventh place.
Gabi McGehee (+13) finished eighth and Watson (+19) was ninth. Rounding out a quartet of top-ten finishers was
Julia Pelletier (+23), in tenth place for the Captains.Â
In Tuesday's second round, Watson got off to a solid start with four pars and a birdie over her first six holes. She snagged a three on the 302-yard par four 6th hole to highlight the front nine. After making the turn, the veteran added five more pars and finished strong with a birdie four on the 472-yard par five 18th.Â
Davis led the Captains with three birdies in the second round including two in her first four holes. She dropped in a four on the 443-yard opening hole and sank a birdie putt on the 331-yard par four 4th. Davis then knocked in her third birdie on the 283-yard par four 14th to help finish out a nine-over 81 on day two.Â
Maddie Cameron contributed her second round score with an 11-over 83. She had three pars on the front and five more on the back nine. The rookie also snagged a birdie on the 427-yard par five 10th hole. Rounding out the day two scoring was Pelletier who stringed together four pars in a row at the turn on 8-9-10-11. In total, she had eight pars and one birdie when she dropped in a three on the 347-yard par four 16th.Â
McGehee added two more birdies for the Captains with under par holes on 10 and 16. She also had five pars to wrap up the tournament at 18-over par.Â
Babson's Vanya Bansal (+12) captured individual medalist honors in the Inaugural CWGC Championship and edged out her teammate, Hannah McCarthy (+14), by two strokes. Rounding out the top five was a three-way tie at 15-over between Menglu Alice Zhu (Babson), Katie Yang (Babson), and Meadow Ciccarella (Johnson & Wales Charlotte).Â
