CNU Competes in Fall Conference Championship; Captains Take 13th at War Memorial

Final Results

GENEVA, N.Y. -- Competing for the MAISA Conference Championship in a fleet of the region's top 18 teams, the Christopher Newport sailing team captured a 13th place finish at the War Memorial this weekend.

The Captains collected 181 total points and tied Old Dominion University, head coach Dreugh Phillips' alma mater, but earned 13th by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker. St. Mary's (Md.) won the conference championship with 60 points while Georgetown finished as runner-up with 76.

Led by a tremendous performance from the B division boat, the Captains posted their best finish at the War Memorial since 2019.

Sailing in B division, Josh Bendura and Hannah Louise Roethel captured a sixth-place showing with 61 points. They kicked off the regatta with a fifth-place effort and added a seventh in the second race. Sandwiched between a pair of double-figure efforts was another seventh-place showing before the tandem combined for a 6-4-6 effort over the final three races.

Grace Watlington and Jon Matney paired up in A division and took 17th place with 120 points. The duo finished with one top-ten effort in the eight completed races.
