WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Wrapping up the final regular season tournament of the fall, the Christopher Newport women's golf team posted a top-ten finish at the Historic Triangle Invitational with a 61-over 637 (317-320). The Captains hosted the inaugural event at the Kingsmill Resort and Spa in Williamsburg and finished 10th out of 14 teams.
The first annual event featured a photo finish as No. 2 Emory held off top-ranked Carnegie Mellon for a one-stroke victory. On the individual leaderboard, Emory's Amanda Zheng tied with Carnegie Mellon's Samantha Wang with a one-under tournament and Zheng captured medalist honors in a one-hole playoff.
Christopher Newport was led by senior
Katie Watson (+9) with a 22nd-place finish on the individual leaderboard. She finished with a three-over 75 on day twoincluding a dominant one-under performance on the back nine. Watson started on the 9th hole and rebounded from an early bogey by going three-under over the next 12 holes. She dropped in four birdies, including back-to-back on holes one and two. She started out the impressive round with a three on the 340-yard par four 11th and added her second birdie on the 331-yard par four 16th.
Julia Pelletier (+16) and
Gabi McGehee (+17) each posted nine-over 81's in the second round. Pelletier birdied the 140-yard par three 2nd and closed out her day with another highlight on the 447-yard par five 9th hole. McGehee also birdied No. 9 after sinking a four on the 466-yard par five 7th hole.
CNU attacked the par five ninth as
Taylor Davis (+25) also picked up a birdie on the long hole. Earlier in her second round, Davis started the day with a two on the 135-yard par three 13th. She added eight pars as part of her 11-over second round to wrap up a two-day 169 (86-83).
Rounding out the starting five was rookie
Maddie Cameron (+20), who finished the 36-hole event in 164 strokes. She followed up an opening round 80 with an 84 on day two. She had eight pars and added a birdie on the 439-yard par five 15th.
Playing as individuals,
Maggie Umphlett and
Sara McCaskill each record 15-over 87's in Tuesday's second round. The duo tied for 71st at 31-over par. Umphlett had seven pars and one birdie while McCaskill added five pars and a birdie on the 299-yard par four 10th.
Christopher Newport will now focus its attention on the first ever Colonial Women's Golf Conference Championship to close out the first-half of the schedule. CNU will compete for the conference crown at Wyncote Golf Club in Oxford, Pa. between October 27-28.
