Captains Win Second Straight With Victory at Luce Trophy

HAMPTON, Va. -- Capturing the team's second straight victory at home, the Christopher Newport sailing team earned a bid to the 2025 War Memorial Conference Championship with a first-place finish at the Luce Trophy this weekend.

The first day featured a dominant performance from the Captains' B division boat with five wins in six races. With seven points on day one, Josh Bendura and Hannah Louise Roethel had positioned the CNU sailing team for a solid finish on day two. In the final nine races, Bendura and Roethel finished no worse than sixth and closed out the win in B division with 36 total points in 15 races. 

In A division sailing, the Captains also picked up the win with Grace Watlington and Jon Matney paired up for the first ten races. The second day finish came from Aston Atherton and Berend van der Meer, who combined for two wins and no worse than fourth place in their five races. Watlington and Matney earned a bullet in the first race of the weekend and carded seven top-five finishes. 

As a team, the Captains finished with 90 total points to edge out Queens University with 98 for second place. The top six finishers qualified for the MAISA Fall Conference Championship, the War Memorial, including Columbia (132 pts), Penn State (145 pts), Princeton (174 pts), and Virginia Tech (198 pts).
