NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After a busy day of action at the James T. and Sarah C. Eyre Courts, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team combined for five singles wins and two doubles victories. The Captains will close out the two-day event on Sunday.
Alex Seretis led the way for CNU with a 2-0 performance in singles while adding a win in doubles play with partner
Ahun Vodela. Seretis downed Averett's Prabjeet Chandhok (6-4, 6-3) and Salisbury's Gianluca Beaujon (6-1, 6-1). He paired with Vodela for an 8-6 win against Salisbury's Asher Willenborg and Jhayden Pappas.
The other doubles win came from rookie duo
Rainer Christiansen and
Gabe Smith. The CNU freshmen slipped by Salisbury's Beaujon and Gurv Suri for an 8-6 win.
Christiansen also earned a 1-1 day in singles with both matches coming down to a third-set tiebreaker. He defeated Pappas 5-7, 6-3, 13-11 and dropped a match to Jaeden Mukkaladyil from Averett 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-8.
Smith and
Sam Halvorsen rounded out the first day for CNU with wins in singles. Smith defeated Lucas Fiandra (Averett) by a count of 6-4, 6-3 and Halvorsen earned a 6-1, 5-7, 11-9 win against Carlos Rullan Zarraga out of Virginia Wesleyan.
Also competing on Saturday was a group of veteran CNU players making the trip across the water to Old Dominion University for the UTR Sports College Circuits. Playing in the open tournament,
Ryan Monroe secured a win against Isaac Magee (6-0, 6-0) before dropping his second match to Delaware's Itamar Tapiro by the same score.
Ashton Legum played well in his match against William & Mary's Oliver Hague, but suffered a 6-1, 5-7, 10-8 loss.
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen forced an extra game in the second set but ultimately dropped a 6-3, 7-5 match to William & Mary's Alexander Karman.
Nesh Kumaresan and
Vincent Truong also competed in the event and the duo paired up for an 8-1 loss in doubles against an Old Dominion pair.
