Doubles Dominance Highlights Second Day of Men's Tennis Action at CNU Duals

Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On the second day of the CNU Duals the Christopher Newport men's tennis team put together an outstanding performance in both singles and doubles action. Taking on opponents from Hampton University, Johns Hopkins University, and Virginia Wesleyan University, the Captains secured 13 total wins on day two.

The impressive performance was highlighted by a particularly strong outing in doubles play. The Captains took the court for six doubles matches on Sunday and earned wins in five of the six.

In singles play, seven different CNU players combined for eight total wins including four against Division I opponents. Overall, rookie Rainer Christiansen had the most impressive day for the Captains by going 2-0 in doubles action and adding a 1-1 effort in singles play. Fellow freshman Sam Halvorsen had the best day in singles, picking up a pair of wins including one against Hampton.

The doubles dominance included a win by Edvard Porsmyr Hansen and Ashton Leguma against Johns Hopkins duo Zahari Stoimenov and Jack Wexler (8-4). Christiansen paired with Gabe Smith for a pair of wins, dropping the Rullan Zarraga brothers from Virginia Wesleyan, 8-1, and earning an 8-5 win over Donte Armbrister and Aryan Arora from Hampton. Finally, Nesh Kumaresan and Vincent Truong also earned a win over a DI opponent with an 8-5 victory against Benedict Badza and Marko Stoikovski while Halvorsen and Ahun Vodela paired up for an 8-2 win against Hampton's Benjamin Mwanza and Jude Killkely.

While doubles suffered only one loss in six matches, the Captains went 8-3 in singles action as well, capping an exceptional opening weekend. Kumarezan defeated Hopkins' Marco Azar in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) and Ryan Monroe added a hard-fought win over Hopkins' Jack Wexler (6-0, 6-7 (5), 10-3).

Halvorsen's two singles wins came against Carlos Rullan Zarraga (6-3, 6-3) and Killikely (6-4, 6-0). Vodela surrendered just two games against Mwanza (6-1, 6-1) and Alex Seretis added a straight set win against his Pirates opponent Tadej Mihajlovic (6-3, 6-4).

CNU will return to action next weekend as they host the CNU Invitational from September 20-22.
