ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A pair of Christopher Newport sailors took part in the Laser South regatta in Maryland as
Aston Atherton captured 12th place and
Walter Roou finished in 16th. The event completed 14 races over two days of racing, hosted by the United States Naval Academy.Â
Atherton had a strong run to start the event with three straight top-ten finishes. He opened with a sixth and a seventh before crossing the line ninth in the third race. He added another impressive stretch with four top tens in five races from eight-to-twelve. His best finish came in the eighth race with a third place finish and added a fifth, sixth, and tenth place showing. He finished with 139 total points and was just three places shy of qualifying for the Carl Van Duyne.Â
Roou posted a personal best 11th-place finish in the 11th race The veteran finished the event with 205 points and a 16th-place finish.Â

NAVY WOMEN'S
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- In the first women's event of the 2024-25 season, the Christopher Newport Captains finished fifth out of six teams at the Navy Women's Regatta hosted by the United States Naval Academy. CNU scored 176 total points with an 81-point effort in A division and 95-point showing in B division.Â
Both divisions sailed together in the event with CNU taking seventh place with the A division boat and ninth in B division. The A division boat was sailed by
Grace Watlington and
Gail Schneider while the B division tandem was Laura Smth and
Summer Duba.Â
Watlington and Schneider paired for 11 top-ten finishes in 12 completed races including a pair of runner-up efforts. The duo went 2-4-2 in three straight races on the second day for their best spurt of the weekend. Smith and Duba notched five top-five performances and finished with their best, crossing the line third.Â

RILEY CUPÂ
NORFOLK, Va. -- The wind in Norfolk allowed for just six completed races in the 2024 Riley Cup and Christopher Newport finished with a top-ten effort in the 16-team event. The Captains finished with 108 points including a 48-point showing in A division and 60-point effort in B division.Â
In A division sailing,
Josh Bendura and
Jon Matney paired up for a ninth place finish. Their 48 points included a win of the second race of the event and four top ten showings. The B division pairing of
Noah Hubbard and
Berend Van der Meer finished in 12th place with 60 points. The tandem captured two top-ten efforts in the final two races of the weekend with a fifth and ninth place.Â
As a team, Christopher Newport edged out the hosts from Old Dominion by 12 points for a spot in the top-ten. The Captains trailed Hampton by ten for ninth place while Georgetown hauled in the victory with 43 points.Â
