CNU Women's Lacrosse Selected to Host Opening Weekend of NCAA Tournament at Jennings Family Stadium

NCAA Bracket

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
For the second straight season, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will compete on the sport's biggest stage as the Captains earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and will open the national playoffs at home this weekend at Jennings Family Stadium.

Following a historic regular season, Christopher Newport earned a first-round bye in the tournament and will kick off the postseason on Sunday at noon. The Captains will host the survivor of an opening-round battle between Catholic and Meredith, which will be held in Newport News on Saturday at noon.

Sunday's victor will advance to the third round of the tournament, which will be held on May 18.

Stay tuned to CNUsports.com for all of the latest information on tickets and media coverage for this weekend's playoff action.

Prior to this season, CNU has previously hosted three games in the NCAA Tournament, including a win over Sewanee on May 8, 2013. The team also kicked off the national playoffs at home in 2008 and 2009.

This year's squad will be making the program's 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Last season, the Captains advanced to the second round of the playoffs after knocking off Johnson & Wales in the opening battle. Meanwhile, CNU also reached the tournament in eight straight seasons from 2006-13. That run was capped off by a trip to the Sweet 16.

Christopher Newport earned its spot in this year's field after compiling a 13-6 record, including three wins over nationally-ranked competition. A mainstay in the IWLCA National Coaches Poll, the Captains have climbed as high as 14th in the rankings while advancing to the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship for the fourth straight season.
