NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
The softball regular season comes to a close on Saturday, as the seventh-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University host the top team in the country, Salisbury University. The doubleheader at Captains Park is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. The Captains are 26-5 on the year, and have won their last 11 games. Salisbury, meanwhile, has not lost since March 14th, and the Sea Gulls are 34-1 and riding a 29-game winning streak.

CNU won two games last Sunday at home over Meredith College, 13-0 in five innings in the opener and 8-0 in six innings in the nightcap. The victories at Captains Park improved CNU's record at home this year to 11-3. Junior pitcher Jamie Martin threw a five-inning perfect game last Sunday vs. the Avenging Angels, facing the minimum of 15 batters. It was her first career perfect game, as she improved her record to 9-1 and lowered her earned run average to 0.84. Martin has now struck out 83 batters in 58 innings this season, and has issued just seven walks. She has not allowed a run in her last 33 innings or work, just eight innings shy of the CNU all-time record.

Salisbury pushed its winning streak to 29 consecutive games on Sunday by winning both games of a doubleheader at home over Stockton by scores of 3-0 and 4-2.  The Gulls haven't lost since falling to Lynchburg, 5-1, on March 14th in the first game of a doubleheader.

Saturday's first game will be the 900th at the helm for Christopher Newport University Head Coach Keith Parr, who is in his 21st season leading the Captains. Parr, a 1999 CNU graduate, led the Captains to their first National Championship in 2022, and has an all-time record of 692-206-1 for a winning percentage of .770. He has led the Captains to 15 straight NCAA berths, and was named National Coach of the Year in 2022.

The first game of the doubleheader will also be the 100th all-time game between Christopher Newport and Salisbury. The Captains hold a 49-48 lead in the series and there have been two ties. The Sea Gulls have won the last three meetings, and five of the last six with the Captains.

The results of Saturday's twin bill will determine the host of next weekend's Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conferernce Tournament, which will begin next Friday, May 10th. The schedule, location, and seeding will be announced by the league office once the regular season is completed.
