NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University continues its quest for a softball National Championship Thursday, as the third-ranked Captains take on the Profs of Rowan University. Thursday's first pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. in first game of the the best-of-three Super Regional at Rowan Softball Field in Glassboro, N.J.
The Captains are riding an 18-game winning streak and have a mark of 33-5 for the season. Rowan is ranked 15th in the country, and the Profs have won 13 straight games to improve to 37-7 on the year. Both teams won three straight home games last weekend in opening NCAA regionals. The best-of-three will continue on Friday at 1:00 p.m. with a second game, if necessary, at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the NCAA Finals in Marshall, Texas, May 30th through June 5th.
Christopher Newport and Rowan have played 13 games in the past, and the Captains hold an 8-5 edge in the all-time series. CNU has won the last four games, including the two most recent meetings in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic in Raleigh, N.C., in 2020 and 2022. The programs first met in 1992, and then went head-to-head in an NCAA regional hosted by Rowan in 1993, a game won by the Profs, 5-2. That game was the only time the programs have met in the NCAA Tournament.Â
CNU Head Coach
Keith Parr is hoping the 14th meeting of the programs will be a memorable one for him. Parr has won 699 games leading the Captains over a 21-year career at the helm. His squads have a winning percentage of 77 percent, and his overall record is 699-206-1 in 906 games leading the Captains. This will mark the sixth time the Captains have advanced to the Super Regional round since the NCAA adopted the format in 2014. CNU has won two and lost three of the previous five Super Regional appearances. This is the third straight "Super" for Parr's team, and the Captains have defeated Virginia Wesleyan University the last two years at Captains Park in the best-of-three Super Regional round.
Tickets will be available at Rowan Softball Field on Thursday and Friday, and all sales will be cash only. Adult tickets are ten dollars, senior citizen and veterans are seven dollars, and students are seven dollars. Tickets for children under 12 are three dollars and children under two years of age are free.
