NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University registered two five-inning shutout victories Sunday afternoon at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. The Captains improved to 18-5 on the season, winning over the Avenging Angels by scores of 8-0 and 10-0. Both games were shortened to five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
CNU scored 18 times and recorded 20 hits over the ten innings played. In the opening game, the Captains jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back. In game two, Christopher Newport plated three runs in the first frame, and wrapped it up with a four-run fifth. In all,
Keith Parr's team scored in eight of the ten innings played in the twin bill.Â
Junior shortstop
Kendall Bentley drove in four runs in the opener with a two-run single and a two-run double. Senior third baseman
Brooke Greaver drove in three runs in game two with an RBI double and a two-run home run, her second long ball of the season. The Captains also left the yard in game two when freshman catcher
Marly Hoefler smacked a three-run home run in the fifth inning to provide the 10-0 final verdict. It was Hoefler's first home run as a Captain.
Junior starter
Jamie Martin got the win in the opener by pitching four scoreless innings and allowing just one hit while striking out seven. She improved her record to 5-1, and has now thrown 11 straight scoreless innings. Junior
Kate Alger upped her record to 8-4 with a four-inning shutout in the nightcap. Alger allowed just two hits and struck out four Angels.
Meredith fell to 11-11 with the pair of defeats. CNU and Meredith will meet again at Captains Park in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 28th.Â
Christopher Newport travels back to North Carolina on Wednesday, as the ninth-ranked Captains are scheduled to play two at North Carolina Wesleyan University in Rocky Mount. The twin bill is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
