Ninth-Ranked Captains Sweep North Carolina Wesleyan by Scores of 4-0 and 9-2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University enjoyed another trip to North Carolina on Wednesday, as the Captains notched two victories over the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan University. CNU won the opener, 4-0, and then registered a 9-2 victory in the nightcap. Keith Parr's squad improved to 20-5 on the season with the wins at Edge Field in Rocky Mount.

Junior starting pitchers Jamie Martin and Kate Alger held the Bishops to just two runs on seven hits in the twin bill, while the Captains scored 13 times on 19 hits. CNU never trailed, and scored a run in the first inning of the opener, and then jumped to a 6-0 advantage with six runs in the second inning of game two.

Martin was spectacular, striking out 11 and going the distance in the circle in the first game. The lefty yielded just two singles in the first and seventh innings, and faced just 25 batters as she raised her record to 6-1 for the year. Martin has now not allowed a run in her last 18 innings of work, and was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week this week for the third time this season.

The Captains scored the only run they would end up needing in the top of the first inning when senior third baseman Brooke Greaver doubled home fifth-year senior Delaney Nuckols, who had reached base on a walk and had then stolen second. CNU plated its three other runs in the top of the fourth, when freshman outfielder Candace Slaw came home on a wild pitch, and later in the inning senior outfielders Jules Donnelly and Katie Currin brought home runs with RBI base hits.

In the second game, Alger took over in the circle and threw six impressive innings for the Captains. She upped her record to 9-4 by giving up just two runs on five hits while striking out eight. The Captains coasted to the seven-run triumph after freshman catcher Mackenzie Sowonik opened the big second inning with a two-run double. Slaw followed with an RBI single, and Nuckols scored a run on a fielder's choice. Greaver concluded the six-run inning with a two-run triple to make it 6-0.

Christopher Newport would add two more in the third frame, as sophomore first baseman Isabel Hall singled home Donnelly, and Nuckols plated another run when she walked with the bases full. Senior outfielder Brooke Childress concluded the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the sixth to account for the 9-2 final verdict.

Slaw, CNU's leadoff hitter, posted five hits in the twin bill, going five-for-eight with two runs scored and an RBI. Donnelly, the Player of the Week this week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, was four-for-six in the doubleheader, and also scored twice and drove home a run. Nuckols scored four times in the two victories Wednesday in Rocky Mount.

North Carolina Wesleyan fell to 14-14 with the pair of losses. CNU traveled to North Carolina on Sunday and also came home with a pair of wins after sweeping Meredith College in Raleigh.

The Captains, who have now won five straight games, return to action on Saturday with another road doubleheader. CNU will play at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, with the opening game set for a 1:30 p.m. first pitch.
