THROGGS NEWCK, N.Y. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team closed out the regular season schedule at the conference championship regatta in New York this week, sailing to a 13th place finish at the America Trophy hosted by New York Maritime. The Captains also sent a team to the SailPack Oriental Intercollegiate where CNU finished sixth among the 18th teams entered into the event.
At the America Trophy, CNU finished with 349 total points including a 192 points in A division and 157 in B division. As a team, the Captains finished 52 points behind Hampton for 13th place in the standings while edging out Princeton by six points.
In B division, the Captains took 12th place with 157 points as junior
Gail Schneider crewed a boat skippered by sophomore Joshua Bendura. The two raced together in all 15 finished races and picked up a win for Christopher Newport in the third effort of the regatta. In a four-race span, the finished with a bullet, a second-, and a third-place finish to help keep the Captains in the hunt early. The duo also finished strong with three more top ten finishes at the end of the weekend.
The A division boat also featured a consistent duo for the weekend as senior
Ellie McFall crewed for
Laura Smith for a 14th place finish. They squeaked by Princeton by one point and trailed USMMA by just nine points. Smith and McFall paired up for three top-ten efforts during the weekend.
In addition to the conference championship, the Captains sent a team to N.C. State University for the SailPack Oriental Intercollegiate where a young group impressed for CNU. The team finished with 115 total points including a 61-point showing in A division and a 54-point effort in B division.
Sophomore
Noah Hubbard steered with rookie Jonathan Matney in races 1-3 and 7-8 while junior
Walter Roou paired up with sophomore Gabrielle Byrne in the 4-6 rotation in A division. The foursome finished in seventh place with 61 points with Roou and Byrne picking up a thrilling win in the fourth race for CNU. The A division boat captured top-ten efforts in seven of the eight completed races.
In B division, sophomore
Sebastian Beavers paired with freshman Berend van der Meer for all eight races and the tandem captured a sixth place showing with 54 points. The finished no lower than 10th and cruised to a strong finish that included one bullet in the seventh race.
