Eighth-Ranked Captains Extend Winning Streak to Nine With Two Shutout Victories at York College

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University pitching gave up no runs and just two hits on Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep at York College of Pennsylvania. The Captains extended their winning streak to nine straight games with an 8-0 victory in game one over the Spartans, and then posted a 3-0 triumph in the nightcap in York, Pa.

Keith Parr's team, ranked eighth in the nation this week,  is now 24-5 on the year. York College fell to 18-12, and the Spartans have now dropped their last seven games.

Junior pitchers Jamie Martin and Kate Alger again proved to be a dominant 1-2 punch, as Captains pitching allowed no runs and just two hits to the Spartans, one in each game. Martin, the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week the last two weeks and four times this season, opened the day by extending her scoreless innings streak to 28. The lefty threw four scoreless frames, striking out ten and walking two while yielding just one single in the fourth inning to the Spartans. She improved her record to 8-1 with the victory. Freshman Haylee Callahan pitched a scoreless fifth inning, and the game ended due to the eight-run mercy rule.

CNU scored four times in the top of the first inning before Martin even entered the circle, The Captains jumped to the early lead thanks to a two-run double from senior Katie Currin, a run-scoring single off the bat of senior Jules Donnelly, and an RBI ground out from sophomore Isabel Hall. CNU added to the lead with a solo home run from senior Caroline Pollock, her fourth of the season, in the third inning, and then added three more runs in the fourth to provide the 8-0 final verdict. Currin brought home her third run of the game with an RBI single in the fourth, and Donnelly knocked in two more with a double to conclude the scoring.

In the nightcap, junior Kate Alger picked up where Martin left off. Alger, who improved to 11-4 on the year, went the distance and gave up just one first inning single while striking out six and walking two. Alger got all the run support she would need in the third inning when freshman Candace Slaw singled home junior Kendall Bentley with the game's first run. The Captains added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when fifth-year senior Delaney Nuckols doubled to bring home two runs and provide the 3-0 final.

Wednesday's victories on a mild and pleasant afternoon in the Keystone State ended a stretch of eight straight road games for CNU, with all eight games won by the Captains. CNU returns to Captains Park on Sunday for a doubleheader against the University of Lynchburg. The first pitch of the opener is set for 2:00 p.m.
