Captains Shut Out Meredith Twice on Senior Day...Jamie Martin Throws Five-Inning Perfect Game in Opener

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University had another dominant day on the softball field Sunday, as the eighth-ranked Captains won both ends of a doubleheader over Meredith College on Senior Day at Captains Park. CNU upped its current winning streak to 11 games with a 13-0 win in the opener in five innings, and then posted an 8-0 victory in six innings in the nightcap. Both games were halted early due to the eight-run mercy rule.

A ceremony to honor six CNU seniors got the day started on a warm and sunny day at Captains Park, and junior pitcher Jamie Martin took over from there. Martin, a lefthander from Lorton, Va., was fantastic from the start, and faced the minimum of 15 batters in the opener, striking out 13 Angels, to register a five-inning perfect game. It was Martin's first career perfect game as a Captain, and just the ninth in the 40-year history of the CNU program. Martin, who has been chosen the Pitcher of the Week the last three weeks in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, has now not allowed a run in her last 33 innings of pitching, and improved her record to 9-1 on the season.

Junior Kate Alger also sparkled in the pitching circle in the second game, throwing six innings of shutout ball, and giving up just two hits. Alger, now 12-4 on the year, struck out nine while allowing just a single and double to the Angels, who fell to 17-21 on the season.

At the plate, Christopher Newport scored 21 times on 23 hits in the twin bill. Senior centerfielder Brooke Childress made the most of her Senior Day start, going three-for-five, including her first home run of the season, a solo shot in the first game. Freshman catcher Marly Hoefler also homered for CNU, a two-run, walk-off shot in the bottom of the sixth frame in the second game that provided the 8-0 final score. The smash was the second of the year for Hoefler.

Freshman leadoff hitter Candace Slaw recorded five hits in the doubleheader, all singles, in six at bats and scored four times. She also stole three bases. Senior third baseman Brooke Greaver knocked in three runs in the twin bill, and now has 102 in her career as a Captain.

Childress, Greaver, as well as second baseman Caroline Pollock, leftfielder Jules Donnelly, rightfielder Katie Currin, and shortstop Delaney Nuckols were recognized before the games as the Senior Class of 2024 for Keith Parr's squad.

The Captains, now 26-5 on the year, end the regular season on Saturday at home with a doubleheader vs. top-ranked Salisbury. The Sea Gulls are 34-1 and have won 29 straight games. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. at Captains Park.
