NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Riding a five-game winning streak, the ninth-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University head to Fredericksburg on Saturday for a doubleheader at the University of Mary Washington. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
Keith Parr's squad pushed its winning string to five games on Wednesday with a pair of victories at North Carolina Wesleyan University in Rocky Mount. CNU won the opener, 4-0, and then dominated the nightcap in a 9-2 victory. Christopher Newport is now 20-5 on the season heading into Saturday's twin bill at UMW Softball Stadium.
Junior lefthander
Jamie Martin has had the hot hand in the pitching circle for the Captains of late. Martin enters the weekend having not given up a run in her last 18 innings of work, and is now 6-1 on the year with an earned run average of 1.14. Martin has been honored as the Pitcher of the Week three times this season in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. Martin and fellow junior starter
Kate Alger are both in the top four in strikeouts all-time in CNU softball history. Alger is second with 384, while Martin is fourth on the list with 323. Michelle Kass-Prewitt holds the all-time school mark with 488.
In the batter's box, senior third baseman
Brooke Greaver has been making up for lost time. Greaver has registered a batting average of .438 with seven doubles, two home runs, and 19 runs batted in, all in just 13 games since returning from an injury. Greaver, the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year last year, is tied for seventh on CNU's all-time home run list with 25, and is just one RBI away from 100 for her career.
The Eagles of Mary Washington have a record of 13-15 so far this season, and are coming off a pair of one-run losses on Wednesday at home to Catholic University, 6-5 and 2-1. The longtime rivals have played 71 times in the all-time series, and the Captains hold a 60-11 advantage. CNU has won nine of the last ten games with the Eagles, and last year won two of three meetings. The teams split a twin bill in Newport News during the regular season, and the Captains recorded a 4-0 win in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Salisbury, Md.
