LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Wrapping up a five-game road swing, the 19th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will travel to Lynchburg for a 5 p.m. test on Saturday at Shellenberger Field.
Entering the weekend, the Captains sit at 10-4 overall, including 3-4 on the road. Meanwhile, the Hornets are 9-4 with a 5-1 mark at home.
Christopher Newport was last in action on April 6 when the squad knocked off Rowan, 19-11, in New Jersey. Against the Profs,
Julia Iapicca erupted for a career-high seven goals, which equaled the fifth-most by a Captain in program history. For that performance, she was celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Along with Iapicca,
Syd Guidi added four goals, which marked her sixth consecutive hat-trick.
Brookelyn Morrison and
Sloane McDonald also contributed two goals apiece, while
Bethany Wyant came through with five saves in the second half, including three in the fourth quarter. The Captains also forced 10 turnovers, including multiple strips by Iapicca, Morrison, and
Emma Jackson.
Inching towards history on the defensive end, Morrison is one takeaway shy of matching the single-season school record of 42, which was established by former legend Sam Wettengel in 2019. Meanwhile, Jackson is two strips away from matching the career record of 89, which was set by longtime standout Emily Johnson from 2011-14.
So far this season, Morrison ranks ninth in the NCAA with 41 caused turnovers, while
Kelsey Winters is second in assists (52) and 21st in points (68). As a team, CNU slots 11th nationally in clearing percentage (.895), 13th in shooting percentage (.521), and 30th in free-position percentage (.537). The Captains are also committing just 13.64 turnovers per game, which ranks 14th in the country.
Lynchburg enters Saturday on a two-game roll, including an 18-3 win at Averett on Wednesday. Against the Cougars, Tori King landed four goals, while Neely Morris and Reagan Bradley had five points apiece. Defensively, the Hornets forced 18 turnovers, including three each by Sydney Dumas, Carson Quigley, and Meredith Bornholdt.
Overall this year, Corinne West ranks 11th in the NCAA with a 7.51 goals-against-average. She has surrendered five tallies or less in eight of her appearances. Meanwhile, on the offensive end, Dumas leads Lynchburg with 39 goals and 55 points, while Morris has 42 points and 42 draws.
In 19 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 13-6 edge in the series. The Captains have won nine in a row against the Hornets, including a 16-5 triumph last year. During the most recent match-up, Winters led the victors with eight points, including five assists. Morrison, Iapicca, and Guidi also contributed hat-tricks.
Following Saturday's bout, CNU will return home on April 20 for a 3 p.m. tilt against Mary Washington.
