GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The 17th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will head to Ohio for a pair of games this weekend as the Captains battle Denison on Saturday at 1 p.m. before traveling to Kenyon for a noon test on Sunday.
Entering the weekend, CNU sits at 8-3 on the season, including 2-2 on the road. Meanwhile, Denison is 5-4 overall, and Kenyon is 4-3.
For those fans unable to attend the games, Denison and Kenyon will both provide live stats and a video stream of the action. Direct links can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is in the midst of a five-game road swing, which opened on Wednesday with a top-20 bout at No. 14 York (Pa.). After the Spartans ripped off a six-goal run entering the second quarter, the Captains matched YCP goal-for-goal over the final 40 minutes of regulation but could not overcome the early deficit on the way to a 15-10 setback.
During the contest,
Syd Guidi registered her fifth hat-trick in the past six games after capitalizing on three of her five shots against the Spartans.
Kelsey Winters added four points, including three assists, while
Brookelyn Morrison and
Page Henry each had a pair of strikes. Morrison also added five draw controls.
With her three assists, Winters bumped her career total to 243, which moved her to third on the all-time Division III charts. She is just four shy of matching former Montclair State legend Tierney Conlon for second on the career list.
So far this season, Winters slots second in the NCAA with 40 assists. That already ranks eighth on the program's all-time single-season charts. She is also the first Captain to reach that benchmark three times. CNU Hall of Famer Meghan Harkey had a pair of 40-assist campaigns during her career from 2008-11.
In addition to Winters, Morrison is one draw control away from matching former All-American Sarah Culver for 10th on the single-season list with her 60th this year. Meanwhile, her 34 caused turnovers are the third-most by a Captain, just eight shy of matching Sam Wettengel's record of 42 in 2019.
Among other fast-approaching milestones,
Sloane McDonald is three points away from the 100th of her career, while
Emma Jackson is six takeaways shy of matching Emily Johnson's program record of 89. Jackson also has 187 draw controls, which is one shy of equaling the second-most in school history. CNU Hall Famer Kaitlin Quigley had 188 from 2018-11.
Denison enters Saturday on a four-game roll, including three straight 20-goal eruptions. Battle-tested, the Big Red has already faced four nationally-ranked programs this year, including a tight two-goal setback at No. 22 Chicago on March 9. Overall this season, Josie Lucchesi leads the team with 39 points, while the entire team ranks 30th in the nation in scoring offense with a 15.78 goals-per-game average.
Kenyon has won its last two games, including a decisive 19-5 triumph over Mount Union on Tuesday. The Owls have surrendered 10 goals or less in five of their seven appearances while allowing just 13 total goals in their two home games this year. Anchoring the defense, Nola Garand ranks 12th in the NCAA with a .537 save percentage. On the other end, Kate Lengel has a team-high 29 points, including 26 goals.
Sunday's meeting will mark the first bout between CNU and Kenyon, while the Captains knocked off Denison, 16-7, in their first match-up last year. Five players had multi-goal efforts for the victors, including four strikes from
Julia Iapicca.
After this weekend, Christopher Newport will continue its travels on April 6 with a noon contest at Rowan.
