NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Rain in the forecast has again prompted a schedule change for the Christopher Newport University softball squad. The Captains will now play DePauw University on Wednesday, with the doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Captains Park. The schools had originally scheduled the twin bill for Thursday afternoon.
Keith Parr's squad is 15-2 and the Captains have won their last four games. CNU defeated New York University twice on Friday at Captains Park by scores of 2-0 and 9-1. DePauw had a record of 7-8 heading into a twin bill at Randolph-Macon on Tuesday.
Christopher Newport is ranked fifth in the nation for the third straight week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The Captains are led by freshman centerfielder
Candace Slaw, who is now hitting .500 for the season with 29 hits in 58 at bats. Slaw has also scored a team-high 22 runs and is 21 of 23 on stolen base attempts through the first 17 games. Junior pitcher
Kate Alger is 7-2 and has an earned run average of 1.35. Alger has struck out 66 batters in 57 innings of pitching, which is tied for 15th in the country in total strikeouts. Slaw was named Player of the Week and Alger Pitcher of the Week this week by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference.
CNU and DePauw have played seven games in the past, and the Captains hold a 5-2 lead in the all-time series. DePauw, located in Greencastle, Indiana, has twice traveled to Newport News to play doubleheaders in 2015 and 2018. CNU won three of those four games, and the Captains have also won two out of three previous games over the Tigers played on neutral fields.
