HAMPTON, Va. -- Christopher Newport sailed ten races in each division on Saturday before stiff winds eliminated the possibility of any more runs on Sunday as they hosted the 2024 Hanbury Trophy at Youth Sailing Virginia in Hampton, Va. The Captains finished seventh and eighth out of 14 teams in the regatta.
The Captains 1 team finished in seventh place with 126 points as both the A division and B division boats recorded 63 points in the event. The Captains 2 team was right behind them in the standings with 152 total points, edging out Washington (Md.) by 12 points for the top-eight finish.
In A division sailing, the Captains 1 boat was sailed by Joshua Bendura and
Berend Van der Meer. The two underclassmen finished with 63 points and trailed a top-five finish by just 16 points. As a duo, Bendura and Van der Meer sailed to four top-five finishes including a team-best third place finish in the fourth race on Saturday.
Their B division counterparts on the Captains 1 team had the finest showing of all four boats on the water for CNU. They also finished with 63 points but wrapped up the B division standings in sixth place.
Grace Watlington skippered with
Walter Roou for the first eight races before
Ellie McFall subbed in for the last rotation. Watlington led the Captains to four top-five efforts including back-to-back fifth place showings in the second and third races.
The Captains 2 team got a solid showing from the A division tandem of
Aston Atherton and
Summer Duba. The CNU pair finished with 68 points for an 8th place finish in division, including a team-best second place showing in the third race. The B division boat was sailed by
Laura Smith for the first six races before
Sebastian Beavers took the helm.
Noah Hubbard joined Smith in the boat while
Gail Schneider paired with Beavers. Smith and Hubbard's best finish was a third-place effort in the second race while Beavers and Schneider finished strong with a fifth-place showing in the final race of the day on Saturday.
Christopher Newport will get back to the water next weekend as they travel to the MAISA Women's in Geneva, N.Y. while also sending a team to the William & Mary Spring in Williamsburg.
