NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport University will host two softball doubleheaders this weekend, although the schedule for the games has been changed a bit due to rain in the forecast. The fifth-ranked Captains will play New York University on Friday, with first pitch now set for 3:00 p.m. CNU will now host Salem College on Sunday, with the opening game set for a 2:00 p.m. start. Rain is forecast for Friday night and Saturday, prompting the changes to the weekend schedule of games.

Keith Parr's squad is 13-2 on the season, and the Captains are coming off a road sweep at Bridgewater College on Tuesday. CNU registered victories by scores of 7-1 and 4-1 behind the pitching of junior Kate Alger and freshman Haylee Callahan. Alger has a record of 6-2 this year, while Callahan is off to a 4-0 start.

At the plate, freshman Candace Slaw had a huge day at the plate Tuesday, recording six hits in eight at bats, along with five stolen bases, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. Slaw is now hitting .519 (27 for 52), and is 20 for 22 on stolen base attempts through the first 15 games.

NYU enters Friday's doubleheader with a 4-6 record on the year. The Violets are also coming off a pair of victories on Tuesday following a sweep of Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. CNU and NYU will be meeting for the first time ever on Friday.

Salem College will enter Sunday's twin bill at Captains Park with a 3-15 record so far this year. The Spirits have lost their last 12 games, most recently falling twice at Agnes Scott on March 13th. CNU and Salem, located in Winston-Salem, N.C., have met just twice, and the Captains won both games in 2015 and 2017.

There will be live video and live stats of the doubleheaders at Captains Park on Friday and Sunday, and the links are provided at the top of this story.
