NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 15th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will remain at home on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when the Captains host Widener in a non-conference bout at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the midweek clash, CNU sits at 5-1 on the season, including 3-0 at home. Meanwhile, Widener is 3-4 overall and 2-1 on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is coming off of its most lopsided win of the season after taking down Rhodes, 19-4, on Sunday. In a battle between two programs that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year, the Captains stormed out to a 14-1 lead in the first half. The 13-goal advantage equaled the program's second-largest edge entering halftime since the NCAA switched to 15-minute quarters.
Taking advantage of 10 cards on the visitors, CNU recorded seven man-up goals, which set a new single-game school standard.
Brookelyn Morrison deposited three of those tallies, which marked the most by a single player in program history. Eventually, the sophomore standout finished with seven points and nine draw controls, becoming just the fifth Captain to record at least seven points and seven draws in a single game.
Along with Morrison,
Emma Jackson caused five turnovers on the defensive side, which marked the second-highest total of her career. For those efforts, Morrison and Jackson were celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week on Monday.
In addition to the award-winners,
Kelsey Winters had three goals and five assists. With that performance, she reached 220 career helpers, moving her to seventh in Division III history and 17th across all three levels of collegiate lacrosse.
Overall, seven different players recorded at least two points during the victory.
Syd Guidi landed four goals on just four shots, while
Julia Iapicca and
Maelyn Eversole added a pair of daggers. With her eruption, Iapicca became just the fourth Captain to open a season with six straight multi-goal efforts. Incredibly, she joined a list that only features CNU Hall of Famers as Ashton Marshall opened 2013 with 13 straight multi-goal outings, Meaghan Galvin kicked off 2014 with eight straight, and Kaitlin Quigley had six consecutive outbursts to start the 2009 campaign.
Meanwhile,
Sloane McDonald dished out a pair of assists on Sunday, while
Maddie Lamy registered her first career goal and assist against the Lynx.
Continuing to rank among the national leaders in a variety of categories in 2024, Christopher Newport slots 16th in the NCAA in free-position percentage (.625) after going 3-for-3 from the eight-meter arc against Rhodes. The squad is also 25th in clearing percentage (.897) and has averaged only 12.17 turnovers per game. That rate is 16th in the country.
Widener comes into Wednesday's showdown after handling Randolph-Macon, 9-6, on Sunday. The Pride stole an early advantage after erupting for a season-high six goals in the opening period. Later, the squad carried an 8-2 lead into halftime before the Yellow Jackets closed the gap to three with two minutes left in regulation.
During the game, Jamie DeHaven had three goals and five draw controls. The senior eclipsed 100 career points and draws earlier this year after garnering All-Conference accolades for her work in 2023. Meanwhile, Clark Trowbridge had three points and three draws against RMC, while Katelyn Rosini added eight saves. Overall this season, Rosini ranks 11th in the NCAA with 57 stops, while her .504 save percentage places her 40th on the national charts.
Wednesday's meeting will mark the first match-up between Widener and Christopher Newport.
Following the midweek action, the Captains will continue their homestand on Saturday at noon against Haverford.
